On February 11, 1990, the undefeated Mike Tyson (37-0) faced off against James “Buster” Douglas for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. During this time, Tyson held the WBC, WBA, IBF titles, and despite many controversies surrounding him, Tyson continued to dominate the boxing world. Going into the fight, Iron Mike was the fan favourite, seeking another 90-second knockout of Buster. However, despite his efforts, Buster remained focused and un-intimidated by Tyson’s boxing style and strength.
Throughout the fight, Buster maintained dominance, although Tyson landed some signature uppercuts to even the playing field. With swelling around his left eye, Tyson managed to knock Buster down in the 8th round. Controversies surrounding the knockdown, the fight continued into the 9th and then the 10th round. Though Tyson fought hard in the 9th round, by the 10th, his eye was completely shut, and Buster was able to knock Mike Tyson down for the first time in his career.
Though Tyson never got up from that knockout, he suffered not only his first loss but also the loss of the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. Defeated, Tyson acknowledged that Buster was the better man that night, and to this day, he considers the Buster Douglas fight one of his best, despite breaking his undefeated streak.
Mike Tyson’s comeback after suffering his first defeat could have signalled his retirement, a calling card to end his career. However, with a mindset to come back, work hard, and use the loss as motivation, Mike returned and once again dominated the boxing world.
